The immersive installation is based on an image research in social media that addresses the phenomenon of superyachts, the problematic consumption of resources by the super rich and their ambivalent relationship with nature. The title refers to the average CO2 emissions of a yacht for 10 guests and 20 crew members (Grégory Salle: Superyachts - luxe, calme et écocide, Édition Amsterdam, 2021).
25 photographs of private luxury yachts against a backdrop of intoxicatingly beautiful landscapes are printed on affiche paper and cut into vertical strips. They hang in rows across the room with the sides of the pictures alternately facing forwards and backwards. The yachts are cut from the strips and spread out on the floor. This symbolic “liberation” brings the scenic backdrops to the fore. The result is a walk-in spatial sculpture that invites reflection on the treatment of nature as a consumer good. The gaps emphasize the consequences of human behavior. Regeneration is only possible if we are willing to cut back on individual privileges, which have arisen in neoliberalism in dimensions previously only known from absolutist monarchies, in favor of the common good and a respectful treatment of nature.
